Southampton, currently at the bottom of the league, suffered a 3-1 loss to Manchester United during matchweek 21 of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

Importantly, United managed to halt a streak of three consecutive defeats at home in the league.

A strong first half from the visitors resulted in them taking the lead in the 43rd minute due to an own goal by Manuel Ugarte following a corner kick.

Amad Diallo’s hat-trick enabled United to turn the game around.

It has been 91 years since United last experienced a run of more than three consecutive home league defeats, but when an own goal from Manuel Ugarte put Ruben Amorim’s team behind the league’s bottom club at halftime, a fourth loss seemed imminent. However, Amad had different plans.

He scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute and then connected with Christian Eriksen for a lovely one-two play in the 90th minute to take the lead for United. Amad then capitalized on a typical defensive blunder by the Saints to secure the match-ball and change the course of the evening.

Alejandro Garnacho had an excellent opportunity to put United ahead early in the match, but that was an uncommon chance for Amorim’s cautious squad, as Southampton appeared to be the stronger team during the first half, with only Andre Onana earning any praise from the home side.

The United goalkeeper thwarted the energetic Kamaldeen Sulemana, who caused problems for Leny Yoro all throughout the match, and then made an incredible double save to block shots from Tyler Dibling and Mateus Fernandes. However, Onana was unable to stop Ugarte’s own goal.

Manchester United nearly displayed their usual tendencies as they secured a 3-1 victory over last-placed Southampton, despite a lackluster showing highlighted by Amad’s contributions.

A misfortunate deflection from Manuel Ugarte during a corner in the first half was neutralized by a different deflection, stemming from Amad’s hard work, which allowed him to level the score late in the game.

The Ivorian took it a step further and secured a lead as injury time approached, snatching victory from what seemed like certain defeat. The finishing touch was provided by none other than him, completing a well-deserved hat trick to ensure United’s three points.

Ruben Amorim will be faced with more uncertainties than resolutions following the match, as the team appeared far from the one that showed up in the previous two games.
