This inauguration signifies the formal transfer of presidential power from the Biden administration to the Trump administration. According to the 20th Amendment, a president’s four-year term concludes at noon on January 20, with the president-elect being sworn in shortly thereafter.

The inaugural events for both the president-elect and vice president-elect are organized by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies. This year, the committee is chaired by Senator Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota, and it will oversee eight key events on Inauguration Day:

  • The procession to the Capitol
  • The vice president’s swearing-in ceremony
  • The president’s swearing-in ceremony
  • The inaugural address
  • The ceremonial departure of the outgoing president and vice president
  • The signing ceremony, during which the new president will sign nominations, memorandums, proclamations, or executive orders
  • The inaugural luncheon
  • The pass in review, where the president and vice president will review military troops
  • The presidential parade, which will be held at Capital One Arena in downtown Washington due to the expected cold weather.

This year’s inauguration theme is “Our Enduring Democracy: A Constitutional Promise.”

What time does Trump’s inauguration start?

The inauguration ceremony is expected to commence around 11:30 a.m. ET, leading up to Trump’s swearing-in at approximately noon, when he officially becomes president. Although the event was originally planned for the West Front of the U.S. Capitol, the president-elect opted to move it indoors to the Capitol Rotunda because of the anticipated cold temperatures on Monday.

How long will the inauguration ceremony last?
There is no fixed duration for the inauguration ceremony; however, previous ceremonies lasted about an hour, with Trump’s oath of office in 2017 and Biden’s inauguration in 2021 both falling within that timeframe.

What is the timetable for the inauguration ceremony?

As stated by the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee, the event will kick off with a musical prelude by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Combined Choirs and “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band.

Senator Klobuchar will call the ceremony to order, followed by an invocation from Timothy Cardinal Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, and the Rev. Franklin Graham. Christopher Macchio, known as America’s Tenor, will perform “Oh, America!”

Next, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh will administer the vice presidential oath of office to JD Vance. Kavanaugh was nominated to the Supreme Court by Trump in 2018 after Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement.

Country singer Carrie Underwood, accompanied by the Armed Forces Chorus and the U.S. Naval Academy Glee Club, will sing “America the Beautiful.”

After their performance, Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the presidential oath to Trump.

The Naval Academy Glee Club will return to perform “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” followed by Trump’s inaugural address.
